I am not the most rabid Zombie or Zombie movie fan. I like ‘em, and have seen about as many as there are out there, but there are far more committed fans of the genre. Though I am really anticipating Jaun of the Dead (thanks HS). Hell, I’ve never even lurched through a Zombie walk. I would, but Ohio hasn’t had one yet that I know about. Back to movies, though. Among Zombie flicks, REC (especially the final sequence,) had me more freaking bunched up in knots than any Z-flick I have ever seen, and mostly because of this scary bastard. That scene is some kind of perfect storm of imagery: the night vision, the way this thing moved, the physicality of it, the total darkness and the sound of the reporter panting in terror. Ugh! If you read my first ever post, you know that the title of my blog speaks to my habit of laughing & chuckling uneasily when I am really scared. Suffice it to say, this movie, mostly the final act, had me laughing my ass off. I would love to hear from others about which Zombie movies, and even which favorite Zombie characters, they have found to be truly scary.
I don't get scared by zombie movies anymore. The only one that really frightened me was Dawn of the Dead '78, back when I was a teen. Even the the FX were kind of cheesy in that movie, I think the scene in the apartment building where Miguel bites a chunk of flesh from his wife's arm freaked me out. It was pretty realistic for its time and I think coupled with the awesome background music provided by Goblin, it really got my heart pounding!
ReplyDeleteHave you seen the likes of REC or Quarantine, the American remake. Both have their moments. Much of it is too fast (ala 28 days later)for my eye, but much of it is just. right.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed Rec 1 and Rec 2 they just finished part 3 and are shooting part 4 right after. There is even talk about a 5th film now I don't know how they will be but the first 2 are really good and creepy. Not really a scary movie but in the Gate when I was younger there's a part when a zombie type guy breaks out of the wall and grabs one of the kids and pulls him back into the wall and that freak me out back then haha
ReplyDeleteI don't do netflicks, I just go to redbox, but they never did have Rec 2 as they advertised. I was really disappointed. Hope to catch it soon. I loved Rec, and I'm thinking of renting Quarantine 2 over this hurricane weekend.
ReplyDeleteI found REC. to be an effective experiment in both story AND filmmaking. I liked the demonic twist to the topic, and that... woman was absolutely terrifying. I was jumping up and down in my seat the entire time she shuffled around that horrible flat. Got a little tired of her in the sequel, though; too much exposure to find scary.
